Phonics curriculum overview
Our curriculum aims to offer ‘Excellence for all, through Jesus’ love'.
With Jesus at the heart, we intend to provide:
- Excellence for all children.
- Excellence for all staff.
- Excellent spaces and opportunities to learn.
Skilled word reading involves both the speedy working out of the pronunciation of unfamiliar printed words (decoding) and the speedy recognition of familiar printed words. Underpinning both is the understanding that the letters on the page represent the sounds in spoken words. This is why phonics should be emphasised in the early teaching of reading to beginners (i.e. unskilled readers) when they start school.
National Curriculum: English
Our phonics curriculum at St Modwen’s is developed using the Read Write Inc (RWI) scheme. It builds on learning a basic alphabet code and develops into alternative pronunciation and spelling of letters. The children work in groups based on their reading progress to ensure that they experience success and gain confidence in their reading abilities. As children move through our phonics curriculum, they will develop confidence in recognising the sounds that letters make and being able to apply their phonics knowledge to read and spell words. Our children will recognise the importance of developing reading and writing skills and empowered to develop an independent love of reading. They will partake in speed sound sessions and story book sessions which enable children to learn new sounds and apply them in reading and writing activities.
