English

The English curriculum at St Modwen's follows the National Curriculum and is designed to promote the development of essential skills in reading, writing, speaking and listening. In each year group, there are different topics and activities that focus on developing language skills, such as grammar, spelling and punctuation. Reading lessons can help children build essential skills such as phonemic awareness, fluency, comprehension, and vocabulary. The reading domains provide a comprehensive overview of the different areas of reading and these include vocabulary, inference, prediction, explain, retrieve, and summarise. To ensure that pupils are able to apply their knowledge, they are also given the opportunity to participate in creative writing tasks, debates and public speaking.
