What we have been learning this week.....
Nursery:
This week the children have continued with the story 'Whatever Next!' by Jill Murphy, recalling what happened to Baby Bear and then completing their very own story maps.
In Maths, we have been learning all about 3D shapes and their properties using the language curved, flat and faces. Let the children have a 3D shape, hunt around the house to see if they can find cubes, cuboids, cylinders and spheres and see if they can describe their properties to you.
Reception:
This week Reception have had fun creating our own stories and recording them using a story map. We have been using lots of story language to retell our stories and act them out with our friends. We have also been writing descriptions of characters from the story 'What the Ladybird Heard'. In Maths, we have been solving addition and subtraction problems using number facts. In RE, we have started to learn about Pentecost and next week we will be thinking about how the Holy Spirit helped the apostles.
Year 1:
This week, we have been comparing Jamaica to England. We looked at the different houses, beaches and fruit and thought about the similarities and differences. In English, we have started a new unit where we will be looking at the features of a fact file. We also focused on some of the vocabulary that we'd like to use and hope to use it in our Hot Task in a few weeks. We have been working very hard in Phonics and have used our Fred fingers to segment the sounds in words.
Year 2:
In Year 2 this week, we have continued our work on fractions in Maths. In English, we read a poem called 'Weightlessness'. We discussed the features of the poem and the vocabulary choices that the author made. In Digital Art, we have created our final piece, using all the skills we gained throughout the unit. We have explored how animals adapt to their environment in Science.
Next week, we will be learning about the features of persuasive letters in English as we prepare to write our own. In Geography, we will be considering why we need to look after our coastlines and beaches. In Reading, we will read our new text, 'Great Women Who Saved the Planet'.
Year 3:
This week we have started our new book in English, 'The Secret of Black Rock'. We will be using this text to write a newspaper article. In Reading, we have also started a new book, 'The Iron Man' by Ted Hughes . In Maths, we have continued our work on 2D and 3D shapes. In RE, we have continued to look at the importance of The Eucharistic prayers during Mass. In History, we have finished our topic on the Ancient Egyptians by looking at the discovery of Tutankhamun's tomb by Howard Carter.
Year 4:
In Maths this week, we have been learning about hundredths and how to divide a 1 and 2 digit number by 10. In English, we have completed our hot task - a third person narrative about Venice. In Science, we learnt about the Water cycle and planted cress so that we can watch the water cycle in action. Today, we have had a visitor from Mary's Meals who spoke to us about the importance of their charity and the work that they do overseas.
Year 5:
We have had a fantastic week this week. We have written poems to enter a competition to win prizes and have the chance to get them published. In English, we started our journey narrative topic and explored a poem about an explorer. In Maths, we have been calculating different angles on a straight line and around a point. We have been carrying on reading 'The Nowhere Emporium' and made predictions about characters. We explored filtering in Science. In RE, we have been learning about the story of Pentecost.
Year 6:
This week we have continued to prepare for SATs next week. Everyone has been working extremely hard and we are so proud of the children's attitude and effort.
Please ensure that the children have a restful weekend and are ready for their first test on Monday morning. Remember that one of the best parts of SATs week is the shared breakfast that we have every morning from 8am. It would be great to see as many children as possible arriving for some toast, pancakes, cereal and juice - all free! We would like all children to be at school every day next week, even if they're feeling a little bit poorly - we can make arrangements to make the week as stress-free as possible. If there are any concerns about next week, please contact the Year 6 teachers at school. Good luck everyone!
