04/10/2024 School Newsletter

                                             Friday 4th October 2024

Dear Parents and Carers,

We have had a special week in school this week as we celebrated together in whole school Mass of Harvest thanksgiving. I wish to thank you for your kind donations of food for the Ss Mary & Modwen's church soup kitchen. Some of our Mini Vinies will be taking these items to the church and helping out with service in the soup kitchen.

On Thursday 10th October, it is World Porridge Day and we will be raising money for the Mary's Meals charity who provide one good meal every school day for hungry children living in 18 of the world's poorest countries.  Our Mini Vinnies will be out in force on the Key Stage 2 playground at the end of the day on Thursday, selling oaty flapjacks and milkshakes. Please pop by and support their fundraising if you can.

As the weather is turning wetter, we are putting out a plea for donations of wellington boots and rainsuits. If your child has grown out of any of these items, please consider donating them to school. We are specifically seeking wellies in child sizes 9,10,11 and all in one rainsuits ages 3-6yrs.

A reminder about school uniform, please ensure your child wears a school tie every day and wears school shoes every day. I have noticed trainers creeping in this week. Thank you for supporting us with our uniform policy to keep all of the children looking smart. It really does make a difference with how they conduct themselves around school and in their work.

Have a wonderful weekend

Mrs Sherratt

What we have been learning this week...

Nursery:

This week the nursery have been looking at autumn vegetables, their colours shapes and smells, then we used autumn colours to print with them. Next week the children will continue with this theme and learning about Harvest time. The children have been fantastic in maths, matching lots of different resources, including matching by shape and size.

Our nursery rhymes this week have been ‘Wheels on the Bus’ and 'Five Little Ducks'. In our RSE topic we have revisited the story of creation and seeing if we can recall all the things God made.

Reception:

In Reception, we have been reading Superkid and learning all about superheroes. We talked about ourselves and what makes us special. We have been busy in our play making superhero masks, scooping up conkers, working on our fine motor skills with the play dough and constructing buildings in the construction area. It’s been a busy, but fun week in Reception. Next week, we will be learning all about our community and family members.

Year 1:

It has been a very busy week in year five. The children have completed their hot task on writing a warning story. They have worked very hard to include everything in their writer's toolkit. Overall, we are very impressed with the children's imagination. In maths, we have completed our addition and subtraction unit including some very complicated problem solving. The highlight of our week was recreating Frida Kahlo's self portrait, there are some amazing artists in year five, they should be very proud!

Year 2:

This week in Year 2, we have moved onto a new text in English, 'Lost and Found' by Oliver Jeffers. We have also explored the features of information texts. In Maths, we have been learning about fact families and related facts. In Art, we practiced drawing in the style of Maria Sybilla, using our sketching techniques to add detail. In Reading, we started reading 'Gorilla' by Anthony Browne and used inference to discuss the text. Our yoga lesson, in PE, was great fun. We did a variety of poses inspired by farm animals! In Geography, we began to consider how we can look after our world, in preparation for next week's lesson, where we will create leaflets to share this information.

Year 3:

This week in year 3, we have written a journey story and started our new topic which is instruction writing based upon the book - How to Wash a Woolly Mammoth. In Reading, we reviewed and evaluated Black Dog by Levi Pinfold. We then started our new book - The Fantastic Flying Books of Morris Lessmore. In Maths, we have been studying addition and subtraction and we will continue this next week. Thank you to all parents/carers who have supported the pupils learn their KIRF statements and times tables. It makes a great difference. In Science, we learnt about exoskeletons and in RE we learned about the parable of the Prodigal Son. In Music, we studied David Bowie's legendary 1969 epic - a Space Oddity as we began our topic on Ballads.

Year 4:

In Year 4 this week we have completed our maths unit of place value by thinking about how to round to 10, 100 and 1000. In RE, we have started our new unit 'Jesus Light of the World', in particular focussing on the Gospel story of the presentation at the temple. In English, we have started to plan our hot task, where we are writing a story set during an earthquake. In geography, we looked at the devastation that an earthquake can cause and practised what to do if an earthquake occurred during school time by hiding under our desks. Next week, we will be writing our hot tasks in English, and we will be starting our new unit on addition and subtraction in maths.

Year 5:

It has been a very busy week in year five. The children have completed their hot task on writing a warning story. They have worked very hard to include everything in their writer's toolkit. The highlight of our week was recreating Frida Kahlo's self portrait, there are some amazing artists in year five, they should be very proud!

Dear Parents & Carers,

At St Modwen's reading for meaning and enjoyment is fundamental to school life. As parents, you are your child’s most influential teacher with an important part in helping your child to learn to read.  Research has shown that children who read regularly at home believe they are ‘Good at Reading’, and are therefore keen to move their reading forward for their own enjoyment. To help support you with reading at home, we would like to invite you to a Reading Workshop here in school to discuss the impact reading at home can have on attainment and strategies to help you get the most out of reading with your child. Please join us on Wednesday 23rd October in the school hall at 15:45. The session is expected to last around half an hour with some time for discussion and questions at the end. I look forward to seeing you then.

Kind regards,

Miss Goodman
