                                          Friday 17th January 2025

Dear Parents and Carers,

We’ve had a wonderful first full week back at school, and it was a pleasure to conclude the week with our very first celebration assembly.  I was delighted to see so many of our children receiving awards for their exceptional work in Religious Education.  We often refer to their RE books as their 'Gift to God', and it’s truly inspiring to see their hard work paying off.  Thank you for your continued support in helping your child grow in this area.

Next Friday, we have an exciting event to look forward to as the Birmingham Diocese launches the Jubilee Year 2025, Pilgrims of Hope!  Our school has been invited to join thousands of pupils from across the diocese for a live stream event, marking the beginning of a year-long series of events.  More details will follow soon.

On Thursday, our Year 3 pupils will be heading off on their trip to Derby Museum, and we wish them a day filled with unforgettable experiences.  Don’t forget to check out our Facebook page for updates on their adventure!

Lastly, I’d like to offer huge congratulations to our pupils who participated in the 'Young Voices' event at Resorts World this week.  They sang beautifully alongside thousands of other children from across the country, creating a record-breaking choir.  A special thank you to the fantastic staff team who accompanied the children - your dedication, especially after such a late night, is deeply appreciated.

Wishing you all a restful and enjoyable weekend.

Warm regards,

Mrs Sherratt

What we have been learning this week...

Nursery:

As we begin our new topic, Once upon a Time, the children have been listening to the story of 'The Gingerbread Man'.  They are beginning to recall characters and retell parts of the story.  With a change in the weather, the children have been able to explore the outdoors when we have ice and frost outside in lots of different places and explore its changes, particularly when it has melted!  In our Maths lessons we have been learning about subitising up to 3 objects, recognising 3 and touch counting objects to 3.

See if your child can look out for the number 3 in your home, or when you are out and about looking for the number 3 in books on food packets or containers. Maybe they can find 3 objects the same!

Reception:

In Reception, we learnt all about Jack and the Beanstalk.  On Tuesday, we found a beanstalk growing in our classroom.  It looked so magical!  We were so curious about the giant that lived at the top of the clouds.  We've also been looking at finding 1 more and 1 less in Maths.  We even challenged ourselves to write a number sentence when adding 1 and taking away 1.

Year 1:

Year 1 have had a busy first full week back.  We've started our new book "Stanley's Stick".  We went on an outdoor adventure to find our own stick and thought of adjectives that best described our stick.  This helped our imagination when writing our Cold Task.  In Maths, we have explored the number of bonds to 20 using our knowledge of the number of bonds to 10.  In RE, we have become more confident in knowing, retelling and being able to write about the story of Jesus’ birth at Bethlehem.

Year 2:

This week, in Year 2, we have sorted 3D shapes in a variety of ways in Maths.  We also completed patterns using shapes.  In English, we 'boxed up' the story of Anansi and the Golden Pot in preparation for planning our own story about finding a magic object.  We have learnt how to use apostrophes for contraction and then used them to write our own sentences.  We had a Computing lesson on algorithms and worked in pairs to write our own.  We looked at the different parts of plants in our Science lesson.  What a busy week we have had!

Year 3:

This week, in Year 3, we have been studying 2 x 1 digit multiplication.  This relies on good timetable knowledge, so please keep practising!  We will be looking at division of 2-digit numbers next week.  In English, we have written a character description focusing on expanded noun phrases and fronted adverbials.  In RE, we finished our Christmas unit and learnt about the crib and how it was invented by Saint Francis of Assisi.  In Geography, we learnt about how a river is formed and the three different courses.  It is our school trip next Thursday, which we are very excited about.  Please ensure PE kits are in school for Monday and Tuesday. They can be left at school.

Year 4:

Year 4 has had a great week.  During Maths, we have learnt how to divide a 2-digit number by a 1-digit number using a formula method.  We have completed our cold task in English and our teachers played a trick on us just like The Twits do in Ronald Dahl's book.  We have come to the end of our Christmas unit in RE by thinking about the importance of Angel Gabriel's message to Mary and researching other messengers.  We completed our artist study of Leonardo da Vinci and completed research about Greece in our new Geography unit.  During PE, we completed a range of partner balances.

Year 5:

In Year 5 this week, the children have been working on building their writing skills to build tension and suspense ready for their hot task.  In Maths, we have been using the bus stop method to practice division, including division with remainders.  In RE, we have been learning about the journeys that were made in the Christmas story and the difficulties faced.  We have started our new Science topic of Space and the children have enjoyed learning about the Solar System and have asked lots of questions.  In PE, we have been working on our passing skills in tag Rugby.  In Geography, we have looked at maps of New York and explored some physical features.

Year 6:

This week, in Year 6, we have continued to learn more about fractions, decimals and percentages in Maths.  In English, we have looked at how scary stories are constructed, and we have practised writing different sentence starts.  In Reading, we have continued with the start of 'Tales of Terror'.  In RE, we have looked at artwork that symbolises the Christmas message.  In PE, we played benchball and practised dribbling in hockey.  In Spanish, we have continued to learn vocabulary associated with school and, in Computing, we designed a computer of the future.
