                                   Friday 13th December 2024

Dear Parents and Carers,

This week has certainly been a busy one!  As many of you know, Ofsted conducted an inspection of the school this week, and I want to extend my gratitude to the parents who took the time to complete the Ofsted online survey.  I will share the full report with you once it is published, which will be early in the Spring Term.

Alongside the inspection, I was incredibly impressed by our pupils' performances in various events throughout the week.  The Nativity performances were beautiful and served as a powerful reminder of the true meaning of Christmas.  Our Year 4 pupils also gave back to the community this week by singing carols at Burton Hospital.  Next week, it will be the turn of our Year 3 pupils, and we wish them all the best.  I received some lovely feedback from patients, staff, and visitors, who were all uplifted by the children's singing.

Looking ahead, we have the Year 5 and 6 carol service on Wednesday at 5:30 pm, which promises to be a festive and heartwarming evening.  We look forward to celebrating together.

Wishing you all a wonderful weekend and a blessed Third Sunday of Advent as we light the pink candle of Joy.

Mrs Sherratt

What we have been learning this week...

Nursery:

This week the children have continued to learn about Advent as we light the second candle.  To help us remember the Nativity story, the children have been learning through role play, taking it in turns to be one of the characters from the story. In Maths, the children have been consolidating their learning of subitising  groups of up to three objects, numbers 1 and 2 and also ABC patterns.  An ABC pattern can be three different shapes, colours, etc. that repeat over and over again.

Reception:

This week we have been super busy!  We performed our very first Nativity in front of the whole school on Monday and then for parents on Tuesday and Wednesday. We were very brave when performing on stage, and we are so proud of ourselves. Miss Butt and Miss Mallinson are so proud of all Reception for trying their hardest this week!

Year 1:

This week Year 1 had their Nativity performance.  Everyone did fantastic at getting on the stage, remembering their dancing and their song!  Well done Year 1, you were brilliant.

In English, we have finished writing our Hot Task, which was to write a diary entry as if we were Guy Fawkes.  We had to remember what happened on each of the days of the Gunpowder Plot and think about meeting the diary entry checklist!

In Maths, we have done a lot of exploring using physical resources such as cubes and counters.  We worked with our partners to solve different questions and compare numbers within 20.

Then we completed a Science experiment.  We tested different materials to see if they would sink or float.  We were shocked to see that the apple floated!

Year 2:

This week we have thoroughly enjoyed showcasing our talents to you all in our Nativity performance.  We really hope you enjoyed it as much as we did!  Another huge thank you for supporting with line learning and the amazing costumes that were provided.  We have also continued our learning about Advent, in particular looking at the story of Zechariah and Elizabeth.  We have completed our final Hot Task of the year and finalised our learning on The Great Fire of London.

Year 3:

Year 3 worked hard at practising our 8 times tables and division this week.  We have completed fluency, reasoning and problem-solving questions on this, and we have also been listening to 8 times tables songs on YouTube.  In English, we have been practising using fronted adverbials and conjunctions.  In RE, we have looked at the visitation and thought about the presence of Jesus.

Year 4:

We had a wonderful time signing at the hospital.  Well done to all the children - they certainly spread the Christmas joy!  During Maths, we have multiplied and divided by 10 and 100 and made great use of our journaling.  We had great fun learning a walking base on the glockenspiel in music.  In History, we conducted a study of a local soldier named William Coltman.  We continue to journey through Advent in RE.  We have boxed up our writing in preparation for our Hot Task in English, based on the Christmas Truce.

Year 5:

In English, we have been building up to writing our hot task about the end of the Blitz and have started writing fantastic introductions.  In Maths, we have started a new topic of multiplication and division and have been looking at multiplying larger numbers.  In RE, we have continued learning about Advent and the story of the birth of John the Baptist.  The children created speeches in Science about the importance of plastic pollution and what we can do as a school to reduce the amount of plastic we use.

Year 6:

This week, we have continued to learn more about the Windrush Generation in English.  We also learnt about the death of George VI in History.   In Reading, we have read more about 'The Raven'.   In RE, we have continued to look at the theme of Advent.  Those of us who are making our Confirmation have also received the Sacrament of Reconciliation.  In Maths, we have looked at Metric and Imperial measures.  In Computing we have finished presentations about the first Computers.
