What we have been learning this week...
Nursery:
This week we have been listening to the story 'Monkey Puzzle' by Julia Donaldson. We have drawn a story map to help recall what happened. A story map focusses on the characters as we talk about the beginning, middle, and end of the story.
In Maths, children have been learning about patterns. A pattern is a series that is repeated more than one time. This can include making patterns with objects and natural materials, numbers, shapes and more. For example, a pattern of colours could be yellow, red, yellow, red, yellow, etc. Why not have a go by using colours or any objects you might have around your home or even with fruit and vegetables by alternating oranges and apples, carrots and potatoes!
Reception:
This week in Reception, we have been learning all about Antarctica. We learnt that it is full of cold ice, and you can find penguins there too! We have painted penguins using different coloured paint. It was so much fun! In Maths, we have been making 4s and 5s. We found it tricky at first but persevered using numicons and double-sided counters. We have really enjoyed learning about Antarctica!
Year 1:
This week year 1 have been enjoying learning their new songs and dances for the Christmas Nativity performance. We can't wait for you to see it! In History and English we have been exploring the story of the Gunpowder Plot. Next week we will be planning our daily entry as we pretend to be Guy Fawkes! This week we thought of questions we would like to ask him and have used role play to gain a deeper understanding of what happened. In Maths, we have been exploring numbers to 20. We have used ten frames and a numicon to represent each number.
Year 2:
In Year 2 this week, we have gone full Nativity mode. Thank you so much for helping your children to learn their lines at home. In English, we have looked in more detail at the Great Fire of London and how we can write super sentences about it. In Maths we have concentrated on column subtraction. We flew through subtracting when the numbers didn’t cross 10 but took time to really understand how to exchange ten over to our ones.
Year 3:
In English this week, we have prepared for and written our Hot Task - our own version of The Bear and the Piano. We have focussed on expanded noun phrases, inverted commas and ensuring that our handwriting is neat. In Maths, we have been learning our 3 times tables which are on the Year 3 KIRF Statements for Autumn 2. In RE, we thought about the importance of standing and listening to the Gospel, as well as learning about the Baptism of Jesus.
Year 4:
This week in Year 4, we have been writing a newspaper article all about the start of World War 1 for our Hot Task. In Reading, we have been reading 'The Firework Maker's Daughter'. In History, we were looking at the effects of rationing in World War 1. We made our own ration books and created a meal plan for the week. In RE, we have been working on the anointment of the shepherd boy, David. In PE, we have carried on our units of yoga and netball. In Maths, we have been continuing our work on timetables, in particular the 11s and 12s.
Year 5:
In Year 5, we have been exploring some poetry in English that links with our WW2 topic. The children also wrote their own poems about WW2. In Maths, the children have been working hard on adding and subtracting mixed numbers and fractions. In RE, we have finished our topic of the parables and sayings of Jesus and have been exploring the message of different parables. The children enjoyed learning about the blitz during our history lesson and have created some blitz artwork. We have also done lots of handwriting practice to help children get their pen licence.
Year 6:
This week, Year 6 have been learning about the blood system in science. In History they have been learning about the events of VE Day. In Reading, we have finished the book 'Brightstorm'. In English, we have started our hot task in earnest. In PE, we have practised more yoga and played matches of basketball. In RE, we studied the prayers that we use to honour Mary. In Maths, we have been dividing fractions. In Computing, we have been looking at the history of computers and, in Music, we learnt to sing the 'White Cliffs of Dover'.
