17/01/2025 School Newsletter

                                          Friday 22nd November 2024

Dear Parents and Carers,

Thank you for your continued support as we navigated the snowy conditions and icy temperatures this week.  We appreciate your understanding as we made the necessary adjustments to keep the school running smoothly.

I’m pleased to share that the Scholastic Book Fair, which took place during Parents' Evening, raised an impressive £190.48. These funds will be used to purchase additional books for the school, benefiting all our pupils.

Next week, we are excited to welcome the PTA into school for the school discos on Wednesday, 27th November.  Bookings are now open on ParentMail for the separate discos for KS1 and KS2.  Please see the details below for more information.

I would also like to kindly remind all families that the school tie is a compulsory part of our uniform.  Recently, I’ve noticed that a number of children have not been wearing it.  We appreciate your support in ensuring that all pupils wear the correct uniform.

Finally, this Sunday at 11am, Year 3 will attend Mass at SS Mary & Modwen's Church, where they will make a commitment to their First Holy Communion as part of the service.  We warmly invite you to join us in celebrating this special moment in their faith journey.

Thank you once again for your continued support.

Mrs Sherratt

What we have been learning this week...

Nursery:

This week the children have been listening to the story ‘Owl Babies’ by Martin Waddell. They have role-played the story, taking it in turns to be one of the baby owls.  We are so proud of how the children are beginning to join in and to see their confidence developing when recalling the story.  We have been very creative in making owls with paper plates and drawing owls with circles and semi circles.  Also, in Maths we have continued learning about the number 2, counting 2, recognising 2 in the environment and finding and matching objects of 2.  See if your child can go on a number 2 hunt in the home.

Reception:

This week, we have been thinking about special celebrations.  The children thought about their favourite and what we should do to prepare for that event.  In Maths, we have been looking at one more and one less.  The children have impressed me with their Maths skills.  In English, the children have been mark making with different items and have enjoyed drawing club.

Year 1:

This week, Year 1 have enjoyed writing their own stories,  remembering to include the words 'and' and 'because' in their writing.  The children are using their phonetic sounds so well in their writing, and we are really proud of the progress they are making.  In Maths, we have continued to practise addition. We have been looking at dominoes and writing family facts based on the numbers displayed.  We are becoming more confident in understanding what the + = symbols really mean.

Year 2:

In Year 2 we’ve focussed on writing our own stories this week.  We carefully considered what our story was going to be about and what exciting vocabulary we would include.  In Maths, we’ve continued looking at adding and subtracting our 2 digit numbers.  We are exploring the column method next week.

Year 3:

This week, we have moved onto multiplication in Maths.  We have been focussing on equal groups and multiples of 2, 5 and 10.  Since the Autumn 2 KIRF Statement for Year 3 is for children to know their 3 times tables, please encourage your child to practice this at home.  In English, we have been learning how to punctuate direct speech.  We have also written a setting description including expanded noun phrases to help us in our Hot Task next week.  In RE, we have been thinking about how God speaks to us in Mass, particularly in the Liturgy of the Word.

Year 4:

This week in Year 4, we took part in a brilliant trip to the Staffordshire Regiment Museum as part of our topic on World War 1.  Whilst we were there, we looked around the museum at all the artefacts from the war, we dressed up in military uniform, and then we took a tour of the replica trench.  In Maths, we have been working on our timetables, especially looking at the 3s, 6s, 7s and 9s.  In English, we are working on writing a newspaper article about the start of World War 1.  In reading, we have started a new book called 'The Firework Makers Daughter'.   In PE, we have been enjoying our new units of yoga and netball.   Finally, in RE, we have been working on the life of Moses, from the burning bush to the plagues of Egypt.

Year 5:

This week, in Maths, we have continued with our challenging fractions unit, focusing on adding and subtracting fractions and converting.  In RE, we looked at the Parable of the Good Samaritan and discussed how we can love everyone in our lives.  In English, children have completed their rags to riches hot task.  We will end the week with some yoga in PE, to relax our minds and bodies.

Year 6:

This week we have been preparing for our hot task in English by reading Alice in Wonderland.  In Maths, we continued with Fractions.  In RE, we have been learning about Mary and St Modwen.

In PE, we have been using space in basketball and continued to practise our Sun Salutations in yoga.  In Science, we have looked at the role of the lungs.  In computing, we looked at brute force hacking.  In Spanish, we have continued to learn vocabulary and phrases to do with habitats.  In History, we learnt about the Berlin Wall.
