What we have been learning this week...
Nursery:
As we start our new school year we welcome back some old faces to our nursery as well some new faces joining our family of St. Modwen's. Although there are initially a few tears as the children are leaving their parents and carers, I would just like to reassure you that this doesn't last long! This week our focus has been to settle in the children in, help them to explore the indoor and outdoor environment and learn the routines of the day.
Please can I take this opportunity to remind parents to label all clothing including coats, wellies and water bottles. We are very much looking forward to the year ahead.
Reception:
This week, we have really enjoyed settling into Reception and getting to know the environment around us. We have been exploring the different areas inside and outside Reception and have enjoyed playing with new friends. We have been busy building in the Construction area and working together to create something. Miss Butt and Miss Mallinson are very proud of Reception and are looking forward to all the exciting things we plan to do this year.
Year 1:
Year 1 have had a wonderful first week back. The children have settled so well into their new routines and we have been learning about our school rules of being safe, ready and respectful. For the next two weeks we will be learning about the moon and finding out facts about astronauts. In maths we have been using our counting and sorting skills to solve problems.
Year 2:
We have had a wonderful week and a great start to our time in Year 2. We have looked at place value in Maths, using a place value chart to show tens and ones. We had a yoga lesson, where we posed like sea creatures. We also learnt about the 5 oceans in Geography. We looked at the text, 'The Skies Above My Eyes', and painted a watercolour sky. We have also explored poetry linked to the text and written our own poems.
Next week, we will continue our work on place value in Maths. In Geography, we will be learning about the coldest place in the world. We will begin our unit on drawing in Art by discussing the work of the artist Maria Sybilla Merian.
Year 3:
In Year 3, we have had a wonderful first week back. We have spent lots of time exploring our book - The Skies Above My Eyes. We have zoomed in on learning about the Milky Way and how stars are born and how they change over millions of years. We have created awesome 3D models of how a star is created and we have produced some brilliant artwork themed on the spiral galaxies. In Maths, we have been studying place value and this will continue next week. In RE, we have learned about what it means to belong to a group or a community. In Geography, we have learnt about oceans and continents. Mr Quinn and Miss Illsley have been very impressed with all the hardwork and focus shown this week. Keep up the great work Year 3!
Year 5:
It has been a great week welcoming the Year 5s back. This week, we have been doing lots of activities based on the book The Skies Above My Eyes. We started the week with some space artwork and building a solar system model. In English, the children have been looking at description and have written a diary entry. In maths, we have started our place value topic and we have been looking at creation stories from around the work in our RE lesson.
