English curriculum overview

Our curriculum aims to offer ‘Excellence for all, through Jesus’ love.’

With Jesus at the heart, we intend to provide:

  1. Excellence for all children.
  2. Excellence for all staff.
  3. Excellent spaces and opportunities to learn.

“The overarching aim for English in the national curriculum is to promote high standards of language and literacy by equipping pupils with a strong command of the spoken and written language, and to develop their love of literature through widespread reading for enjoyment”.

National Curriculum: English

Our English curriculum at St Modwen’s is built on six core concepts: spelling, handwriting, composition, vocabulary, punctuation and grammar. As children move through our English curriculum, they will develop the skills needed to have a strong command over the written word. At St Modwen’s we have a core literacy spine which has wealth of diverse literature to ensure the children feel inspired to write. As the children travel through the school, they will encounter the core Talk for Writing principles which embed important modelling, discussing, drafting and writing stages. It is vital that all children feel pride in their written work and that is why celebrating the children’s published work is so important.  It is our priority to ensure the children follow a writing process which is underpinned by the National Curriculum. This is effectively achieved by mastering the key writing skills: analysing, generate ideas, collecting vocabulary, planning, writing, editing and publishing. Speaking and listening is an important strand of the English National Curriculum. Within their English lessons the children will be given opportunities to clearly articulate their ideas, debate, perform, present and listen to ensure their talents in these areas can be developed.

In both KS1 and KS2 a clear writing process is followed, this ensures that our children have an awareness of their audience, purpose and context and can adjust their writing accordingly.  Over time, the children will write for a range of purposes and have the opportunity to fine-tune the key skills they have acquired along the way. The children will learn how to write to instruct, entertain, perform, inform, persuade, discuss and explain. At St Modwen’s we believe that English is an essential part of the curriculum and is an integral part to all learning. We are committed to delivering an exciting and engaging English curriculum which inspires a love of writing and encourages children to write creatively and with enthusiasm.
