Art and Design curriculum overview

Our curriculum aims to offer ‘Excellence for all, through Jesus’ love.’

With Jesus at the heart, we intend to provide:

  1. Excellence for all children.
  2. Excellence for all staff.
  3. Excellent spaces and opportunities to learn.

‘A high-quality Art and Design education should engage, inspire and challenge pupils, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design.’

National Curriculum: Art and Design

Our Art and Design curriculum at St Modwen’s is built on four core strands which run through the curriculum. These are Drawing – exploring mark making in all its forms, experimenting with line, tone, and texture and using a wide range of materials to express ideas. Painting – using sketchbooks to practice painting methods and exploring between different media within a piece of artwork. Sculpture – constructing and creating models with a wide variety of materials. Printing – producing a wide range of creative work and building on skills in printmaking. Collage – improving mastery art techniques using a combination of materials to cut, tear and glue, arranging these materials to add texture.

As children move through our Art and Design curriculum, they will be able to think critically and develop a more rigorous understanding of Art and Design. They will also know how Art and Design both reflect and shape our history and contribute to the culture, creativity and wealth of our nation. Our children will recognise the creativity that is encouraged from the very beginning of their school experience. Within EYFS, children are immersed in Art in a child-initiated way, through Expressive Arts and Design. Across Year 1 to 6, children are provided with opportunities to experience a variety of media and techniques and are educated upon influential artists and craft makers from around the world, both past and present. They will partake in exciting opportunities to display their artwork across the year.
